Understanding High-Risk Transactions and Fund Release Process
To protect nonprofits and their donors from fraudulent or unintended donations, certain transactions are classified as high risk. These transactions are automatically placed in a reserve under the CauseMatch Pay “Risk Rules” until the potential risk has been verified or cleared.
What Are High-Risk Transactions?
Transactions may be classified as high risk under the following conditions:
Duplicate donations: Multiple donations made using the same credit card, for the same amount, within a short time frame.
Large donations: Donations of $30,000 or more.
Gateway-flagged donations: Transactions identified as potentially risky by the payment processing gateway.
These measures help safeguard both nonprofits and donors by ensuring that all high-value or unusual donations are verified before being released.
When a donation is flagged as high risk, the organization will be notified by email with details of the transaction and next steps for resolution.
How to Remove a Transaction from High-Risk Status
A transaction will be removed from the high-risk reserve once any of the following conditions are met:
Important Note for Donations Above $30,000
For all donations above $30,000, a letter of intent from the donor is required before funds can be released and made payout-ready.
